About

My name is Chris Chiu. I am a software and game developer from Austria currently located in Taipei, Taiwan, with over a decade of industry experience, and have worked at companies such as Greentube and Sproing (now Purple Lamp Studios), working on videogames for platforms such as PC, consoles, as well as mobile platforms. I have also developed and worked on 3D-based applications for content creation.

I enjoy the interconnection of different fields that is inherent in multimedia applications and games, and the diversity of challenges these fields provide, both from a technical as well as an artistic standpoint.


Programming

My philosophy

I consider the cliché "jack of all trades, master of none" a myth; just because someone reaches out to other disciplines does not mean mediocrity in one's own field. I rather believe that anyone can benefit from looking beyond their own comfort zone.

My mantra therefore is that in order to create the best software, developers need multidisciplinary expertise. A software developer should know the fields that the software touches upon; therefore I strive to be capable also in other fields connected to multimedia software development, such as creation of audiovisual assets.

Whether it being a one-stop-shop creating all assets for the software I develop, or to be able to better cooperate with artists, audio designers and musicians; be it as an artistic programmer, a technical artist, or anything in between, bridging the gaps between disciplines sometimes perceived as incompatible in terms of mindsets: my hope is that I can be the developer equivalent of a swiss army knife.

I offer software development for 3D realtime rendering applications such as games, 3D content creation applications, VR software, and more.

My game development experience covers PC, console and handheld systems from all three major vendors (Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft) and mobile (iOS, Android). I have fulfilled many different roles, including Lead and Senior Developer, and worked in gameplay programming as well as more technically oriented tasks such as tools development and optimization.


Art

Art Asset Production

In conjunction with multimedia software development, sometimes you don't want to hire an extra hand for the required graphical assets; or you need a developer who can fit in a team of people from different fields, and jump in at any time to assist even in art-related tasks.

I offer digital visual asset creation (2d and 3d) for in-app or in-game content, user interfaces, and more.

Additional art services include design and layouting of brochures and print media, video production, photography, illustration and web design and development.

Being a classically trained piano player, I have also worked on music and audio for games. I offer audio services in all departments, from recording or synthesizing sound assets, composing music to producing/recording.
